3 Centre-Backs That Are Bossing the Football World

When the masses of football fans around the world tune in to watch the beautiful game, they’re no doubt hoping to see their favoured team score some fantastic goals. They’re hoping to watch mazy dribbles by tricky wingers, as they dance round the opposition with the ball seemingly glued to their feet. Basically, everyone is wanting to be entertained by some thrilling attacking football.

This innate preference for the attacking side of the sport, means that forwards are consistently held up as the pinnacle of the game. That’s why these stars, such as the 3 players who just might be better than Ronaldo and Messi today, are paid so highly, as well as finding their names adorned on the backs of many youngsters’ replica shirts.

However, we’re going to be focussing on the other end of the pitch today and be discussing some of the greatest defenders in the game. After all, it doesn’t matter how many goals your team scores if they’re just letting in more at the back. So, here are our picks for 3 centre-backs that are currently truly bossing the football world.

Marquinhos

This player has become the beating heart of the back line of Paris Saint Germain. Whilst his teammates further up the field, such as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe might generate more headlines, Marquinhos has been equally as pivotal for the club’s huge success. Since he signed for the Paris side back in 2013, they’ve solidified themselves as the titans of Ligue 1, and have become a major force in European football.

It’s not just for his club side that Marquinhos has excelled, as he’s also been a massive feature for Brazil, since he made his debut for the national side in 2013. The 28-year-old will be one of the key players for Brazil at the upcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the bookmakers are predicting that it will be a successful tournament for Marquinhos and his team. They’re currently the favourites to win the competition, with odds of 9/2 at time of writing.

The World Cup will be of great interest to bettors globally, including in the Middle East. That’s thanks to websites like Arabian Betting, who have rounded up all the best Arabic betting sites for the World Cup. Each choice is one of the top online bookmakers in the region, and enables them to bet on football, as well as many other sports. Plus, there are many bonuses offers available for their visitors, including free bets to use on matches.

Ruben Dias

Manchester City have become a true juggernaut of modern football, with the English side having won the Premier League 6 times in the last 10 years. The Spanish supreme tactician Pep Guardiola has been the manager for 4 of those wins, and he’s revered for his mesmerising possession based football. A big part of this style, is to have players in every position that are extremely comfortable on the ball, and that’s true of the centre-back Ruben Dias

The 25-year-old joined City in 2020 for a gigantic reported fee of around £61 million, and quickly brought an air of level-headed composure to proceedings. This defensive composure allows City to have a solid foundation to play their brilliant, expansive football.

Antonio Rudiger

This centre-back is known to be one crazy character, and the only thing that is greater than his ability to wind up his opponents, is his ability to defend. Antonio Rudiger first came to prominence when he played for Italian side, Roma, where he impressed in Serie A with a number of quality performances. This was enough for London side Chelsea to come calling, and they acquired his services in the summer of 2017 for a reported fee of £29 million.

The German international didn’t find life in the Premier League easy at first. Whilst he was a steady performer, he struggled to have the same impact as in Italy. In fact, there were constant rumours circulating that he wanted away from Stamford Bridge. This all changed though when his compatriot, Thomas Tuchel, arrived as manager in January 2021.

The two seemed to bring out the best in each other, and with Tuchel at the helm, Chelsea went on to have a miraculous end of the season, winning the 2021 Champions League. It wasn’t just Tuchel’s tactical nous that captured the biggest prize in European football, as Rudiger’s monstrous presence in defence helped them to swat aside some great teams on the way. One of them was Spanish side Real Madrid, and they obviously liked what they saw, as they signed the 29-year-old in June 2022.
