One Day International matches can be pretty close, as the teams fight with each other and give each other tough competition. The goal of each team is to score as many runs as possible, to give the opponent a big number to chase, and later stop them from scoring and send back the batsmen as soon as possible. It can be seen in the other way round as well, as the team that fields first makes sure that the opposing team doesn’t get to score high so that in the latter half of the match, they can sail through easily. And, the world has already witnessed some of the largest margins of ODI victory.

10. Sri Lanka

The 4th match of Group B in the 2007 ICC World Cup was played between Bermuda and Sri Lanka at the Queen's Park Oval Ground, Port of Spain, on 15th March 2007. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first and they made a score of 321 runs with 6 wickets lost in 50 overs.

Mahela Jayawardene played fabulous innings while scoring 85 runs with 6 boundaries and 2 over-boundaries in 90 balls. And now, this match deserves its mention among the largest margins of ODI victory.

Bermuda, while chasing the target of 322 in the second innings, lost all their 10 wickets in just 78 runs within 24.4 overs. Sri Lankan bowler Farveez Maharoof bowl amazingly well and took 4 wickets in his 7 over spell out of which 1 over was maiden, while he yielded just 23 runs with an economy rate of 3.28.

Sri Lanka gained a victory against Bermuda by 243 runs. Mahela Jayawardene achieved the player of the match title for his amazing batting performance.

The final match of the 2000 Coca-Cola Champions Trophy was played between India and Sri Lanka at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium on 29th October 2000.

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first and they made a score of 299 runs, losing 5 wickets in 50 overs. Sanath Jayasuriya played leading innings while scoring 189 runs with 21 boundaries and 4 over-boundaries in 161 balls.

India, while chasing the target of 300 in the second innings, lost all their 10 wickets in just 54 runs within 26.3 overs. Sri Lankan bowler Chaminda Vaas bowl perfectly well and took 5 wickets in his 9.3 over spell out of which 1 over was maiden.

He conceded just 14 runs with an economy rate of 1.47. Sri Lanka achieved victory against India by 245 runs. Sanath Jayasuriya won the player of the match award for his fabulous batting performance.

The 4th ODI match of Group M in the 2008 Asia Cup was played between Hong Kong and India at the National Stadium, Karachi, on 25th June 2008. India won the toss and opted to bat first and they made a score of 374 runs with 4 wickets in 50 overs.

Suresh Raina played a superior innings while scoring 101 runs with 7 boundaries and 5 over-boundaries in just 68 balls, and one of the most successful cricket captains, MS Dhoni, also played extremely well while scoring 109 runs in just 96 balls.

Hong Kong, while chasing the target of 375 in the second innings, lost all their 10 wickets in just 118 runs within 36.5 overs. Indian bowler Piyush Chawla took 4 wickets while giving just 23 runs in his 10-over spell. India emerged victorious against Hong Kong by 256 runs.

Besides, Suresh Raina took the player of the match award for his wonderful batting innings. Needless to say, this match deserves its place among the largest margins of ODI victory.

 

7. Australia

The 31st match of Pool A in the recent 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup was played between Australia and Namibia at the North West Cricket Stadium, Potchefstroom, on 27th February 2003.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first and they made a score of 301 runs with 6 wickets in 50 overs. Matthew Hayden played a marvelous inning while scoring 88 runs with 9 boundaries and 3 sixes in 73 balls.

Namibia, while chasing the target of 302 in the second innings, lost all their 10 wickets in just 45 runs within 14 overs. Australian bowler Glenn McGrath bowl extremely well and took 7 wickets in his 7 over spell out of which 4 overs were maiden while giving just 15 runs with an economy rate of 2.14.

Australia gained a victory against Namibia by 256 runs. And, one of the best fast bowlers of all time, Glenn McGrath, won the player of the match title for his amazing bowling performance.

The 19th match of Pool B in the recent 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup was played between South Africa and West Indies at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia, on 27th February 2015.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first and they made a score of 408 runs with 5 wickets down in 50 overs. AB de Villiers played a one-of-a-kind innings while scoring 162 runs with 17 boundaries and 8 sixes in 103 balls.

West Indies, while chasing the target of 409 in the second innings, lost all their 10 wickets in just 151 runs within 33.1 overs. South African bowler Imran Tahir bowl was extremely good and took 5 wickets in his 10 over spell out of which 2 overs were maiden.

Bermuda won the toss and opted to field first. India then made a score of 413 runs losing 5 wickets in 50 overs. Virender Sehwag scored 114 runs with 17 boundaries and 3 sixes in just 87 balls.

Bermuda, while chasing the target of 414, lost all their wickets in just 156 runs within 43.1 overs. Indian bowler Ajit Agarkar bowl extremely well and took 3 wickets and gave just 38 runs. Besides, Anil Kumble also took 3 more while conceding 38 more runs.

They made a score of 301 runs losing 8 wickets in 50 overs. Hashim Amla played leading innings while scoring 112 runs with 8 boundaries in 128 balls.

Sri Lanka, while chasing the target of 302, lost all their wickets in just 43 runs within 20.1 overs. South African bowler Morne Morkel bowl extremely well and took 4 wickets in his 6 over spell.

They made a score of 399 runs with 6 wickets in 50 overs. JP Duminy played leading innings while scoring 129 runs with 7 boundaries and 4 over-boundaries in just 117 balls. And, AB de Villiers also played extremely well while scoring 109 runs in just 99 balls.

Zimbabwe, while chasing the target of 400, lost all their 10 wickets in just 127 runs within 29 overs. South Africa gained a victory against Zimbabwe by 272 runs. Besides, JP Duminy won the player of the match title for his inspiring batting innings.

Australia played the 26th match of Pool A in the recent 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup against Afghanistan. The match was played at the Western Australia Cricket Association Ground, Perth, on 4th March 2015. Afghanistan won the toss and decided to field first.

Australia made a score of 417 runs and lost 6 wickets in 50 overs. David Warner played fabulous innings while scoring 178 runs with 19 boundaries and 5 sixers in just 133 balls.

Steven Smith also played well while as he scored 95 runs in 98 balls. Afghanistan, while chasing the target of 418, lost all their 10 wickets in just 142 runs within 37.3 overs.

The 1st ODI match of the 2008 Associates Tri-Series in Scotland was played between Ireland and New Zealand at the Mannofield Park, Aberdeen, on 1st July 2008. Ireland won the toss and opted to field first. New Zealand made a score of 402 runs with just 2 wickets down in 50 overs.

Brendon McCullum played an awesome inning while scoring 166 runs with 12 boundaries and 10 sixes in just 135 balls. And, James Marshall also played marvelously well as he scored 161 runs in 141 balls.

Ireland, while chasing the target of 403 in the second innings, lost all their 10 wickets in just 112 runs within 28.4 overs. New Zealand emerged victorious against Ireland by 290 runs. Brendon McCullum won the player of the match award for his wonderful batting innings.

 

Conclusion

These matches are some of the most amazing ones in the history of cricket. In many of these, the winning teams have absolutely swept the losing team away, even though some of the losing teams are strong ones. Some fans feel excited about how their favorite teams absolutely diminish the opponents, while other fans prefer a more competitive game so that the excitement is maintained from the beginning until the end.
