Top 10 Best Video Game Movies of All Time
October 21, 2021 By Sourav
There will rarely be a person who has not craved to witness the games he has played on an almost fanatic level to be cinematized on the big screen. Fortunately, many of the video games that were immensely popular in their gaming existence were portrayed brilliantly in the cinematic world. Here is a splendid list of the Top 10 Best Video Game Movies of All Time.
Best Video Game Movies of All Time | 2021 Updates
10. Mortal Kombat
It banked its appeal on being extremely bloody, visceral, and just plain nasty. The movie, however, turned out to be a sanguine, made-for-children affair with a terrible techno title track, and a long-haired Christopher Lambert well beyond his sell-by-date.
The best thing you can feel about Mortal Kombat is that it's not as bad as was the Jean Claude Van Damme movie based on Street Fighter. Or the one based on Dead Or Alive. Or also Tekken. But it happens to be one of the Top 10 best video game movies ever made.
9. Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Even for the low expectations, we held for the Resident Evil: Apocalypse film, it barely managed to be even a disappointment. The set-up is much more evocative of the game itself, but Apocalypse simply uses the Resident Evil brand advantage to recycle a fairly pedestrian zombie (read: infected) storyline and the second film shows a franchise already beginning to run out of steam.
Bad as it was though, it's still way better than Mortal Kombat, and makes the list of the top 10 best video game movies of all time.
8. Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life
The second Lara Croft film, Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life, defied all sorts of expectations, logic, and reality itself by expertly managing to be even sillier than the first installment while being only half as entertaining too. However, Jolie gave a great performance. Besides, the supporting cast including Gerard Butler and Djimon Hounsou also gave their best.
Lara Croft's films aren't really good as a rule, but it looks like there might be even more coming. However, it deserves its mention in the list of the top 10 best video game movies of all time.
7. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
The Final Fantasy franchise has offered some of the most fanatical fans being in existence. They are so loyal and committed to Square Enix's JRPG mega-sellers that an entire spin-off industry has also been created to satiate their needs accordingly.
Final Fantasy fans buy books, CDs, figurines, key chains, perfumes, merchandise, energy drinks, dongles, stuffed toys – in fact, anything if it's a part of the Final Fantasy brand, and it comfortably makes the list of the top 10 best video game movies of all time.
6. Max Payne
As a video game, Max Payne was an astounding package. It was the perfect mix of stylish shooting action and knowing satire and at the time of its hyped release, its bullet-time gunplay made it a real groundbreaking piece of mass entertainment. By the time the film came out though, bullet-time had been used by almost every second film coming out of Hollywood so on-screen it sort of just looked derivative.
Not only that, but Max Payne made the horrific mistake of taking itself too seriously. Still, it doesn’t make the mistake of not clinching a title in the list of the top 10 best video game movies ever made.
5. Resident Evil
While it's not exactly what you'd call a great film, or even a decent one, we have to really own up to possessing a small soft corner for Paul W.S. Anderson's schlock horror flick Resident Evil.
The story is absolute garbage, but the mood succeeds in playing on the viewer’s nerves rather successfully. With a huge follower who just loved this film, Resident Evil definitely deserves its place among the top 10 best video game movies of all time.
4. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
The first of two films casting Angelina Jolie as the most famous female character appeared in gaming is utterly silly and altogether rather forgettable. However, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider deserves appreciation as Jolie is the perfect choice to play the character, Croft.
Not only does she nail the lithe athleticism and the rapier wit of the Tomb Raider protagonist, but she's also equal parts brains, brawn, and raw sex appeal. This film now holds fourth place in the list of the top 10 best video game movies of all time.
3. Hitman
It isn't a very good film. It's really humorless. It's bleak. It feels like it takes a rather small age to sit through, probably because of the fact that it uses too much slow motion in an attempt to appear stylish. However, in Timothy Olyphant, Hitman at least enjoys a lead actor that does some justice to the source material.
For most of the film, Olyphant has maintained the stoic pragmatism of Agent 47 down cold. It deserves a place in the list of the top 10 best video game movies ever made.
2. Silent Hill
Until Prince Of Persia blew into town and made history, this lumpy adaptation of one of the biggest video game companies, Konami's premier horror title won the pack by a country mile. However, unlike Bruckheimer's memorable film, Silent Hill takes liberties with its gaming franchise's mythos and ends on around five minutes of garbage exposition.
With a great rating in IMDB and Rotten Tomato, this movie deserves the runner-up place in the list of top 10 best video game movies of all time.
1. Prince of Persia
As far as the top 10 best video game movies of all time are concerned, Prince of Persia is at the very top of the list. Jerry Bruckheimer's sand, sorcery, and swordplay blockbuster are considered disposable popcorn fare. But, at least it's extremely watchable popcorn fare.
It's fun, it doesn't really take itself too seriously. And, it even manages successfully to convey what made the games so much enjoyable without copying them in a wholesale fashion. It's the best film adaptation of a video game that was ever made, even if that isn't really saying very much.
